BROKEN BOW--Each November, the Nebraska One Box Pheasant Hunt in Broken Bow, Nebraska, hosts hunters from all over the country for three days of shooting competitions, hunting activities, award banquets, and social events. Sunrise to sunset, select hunters search the sky for majestic pheasants to take flight. Equipped with ONE BOX of shells, only ONE five-member team can share the glory of bagging the most birds. The 57th One Box Pheasant Hunt featured seven new teams and 37 past shooters. Many competitors traveled from out of state for this adventure of a lifetime and also participated in the Lynn Berggren Memorial Hunt hosted by volunteers early Thursday morning. Fundraisers, award banquets, and social events were held at the Cobblestone Hotel and One Box Convention Center in Broken Bow, NE. Area community members also hosted each new team, throwing cocktail parties to welcome the many sportsmen to Custer County. Sporting clays and trap shooting competitions were also on the schedule at the One Box Gun Club located southwest of Broken Bow. The CATTLEMEN’S BAWLERS new team takes 1st place, following the 57th Annual One Box Pheasant Hunt in Broken Bow, Nebraska. This team was welcomed to Custer County and graciously hosted by Jim & Cindy Duncan, Jeff & Karen Evans, Jeff & Lisa Johnson, and Don & Deb Cantrell. Captain: Allen Strong (Holyoke, CO) Kent Leibhart (Broken Bow, NE) Casey Williams (Broken Bow, NE) Rudy Haynes (Holyoke, CO) Todd Fenton (Broken Bow, NE) With one box of shells, this five-member team scored 85 POINTS shooting 15 pheasants and five quail to take first place. Local guides Pat Berggren and Joe Franssen, dog handler Tehl Keslar, and scorekeeper Zach Hammond share the glory. The MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN new team came in second with 75 POINTS, and the VIP new team came in third with 73 POINTS. The competing past shooters team (#4) captained by Dave Kranig, took first place. Team members included Karl Arnold, Less LaFon, Dave Downey, and John Jordan. Travis Collier and Colby Collier helped guide this successful team. The One Box corporation is composed of local residents who aim to promote the fine hunting and recreational opportunities so abundant in Central Nebraska. The group is instrumental in funding local scholarships, awarding more than $385,000 to local scholars since 1981. Funds generated by this non-profit organization also maintains the One Box Gun Club and supports a successful youth shooting program with members competing in elite national competitions.
