Officials Discuss Cedar Tree Control at New Workshop

NIOBRARA, NE – Officials from the Nebraska Game and Parks along with Nebraska’s Pheasants Forever chapters are putting together workshops that discuss the impact of Eastern Red Cedar Trees.

News Channel Nebraska’s Andy Classen sat down with Dillon Forgarty from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln to talk about the issue. Though most trees are good for wildlife and the environment, the Eastern Red Cedar has the opposite effect in Nebraska.

“We have an interesting case where we have a native species that’s actually become an invasive species in Nebraska and it’s causing transitions from grassland communities to cedar woodland communities, which isn’t good for wildlife here in Nebraska,” Forgarty says.

Forgarty explains that the workshops are meant to spread the message and educate people on the effects of the Red Cedar Trees.
