NORFOLK - Northeast Community College students in the diversified manufacturing program have created a new version of the classic board game and have turned it into a fundraiser.
On Wednesday, the students and their instructor Steve Wagner delivered the set to the Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce. Wagner says that the idea of the chess set was developed two years ago when they held their Manufacturing Day open house and realized they needed some kind of giveaway.
Wagner spent the summer of 2017 writing programs, designing the pieces, and having them produced in a variety of materials on the diversified manufacturing program's equipment. Last fall, the Hawks Manufacturing Club became involved in the project and sold six chess sets. Wagner says he hopes the project gives his students a getter understanding of the manufacturing process, including determining cost, cost analytics, and considering profit loss.
The proceeds will go towards a scholarship for a student studying diversified manufacturing, other funds will help support students on field trips and visits to manufacturing facilities.
