Norfolk Now Showcases Student Collaborations

NORFOLK - Business leaders in Norfolk are getting a glimpse at what their future workforce has to offer.

Local organization Norfolk Now hosted two presentations Wednesday from student organizations that they’ve partnered with.

One was Northeast Community College’s manufacturing club, who presented the Norfolk Area Chamber with one of their custom-made chessboard sets.

“I’ll be honest, when I first stepped in to start working on this I really had no idea what I was doing,” said Northeast student Brenden Martinsen. “It was amazing how fast things started to come together.”

The students teamed up with Norfolk Now on a video promoting their club and the school’s annual manufacturing day event, which saw increased attendance this past year.

“It was great to work with them,” said Northeast student Jared Reed. “The exposure for the program itself is just incredible.”

Chamber members also saw a 12-minute documentary about Norfolk High School’s Career Academy produced by Norfolk Now’s Street Team, a six-week mentorship program for high schoolers exploring careers in media.

“It’s been cool to learn different tools, like how to connect with people or how to interview or just do anything,” said Norfolk High senior Shay Ellis.

The students said an opportunity to show off their talents for area leaders is invaluable.

“It made it easier for me to pick what I’m interested in,” said Norfolk High’s Rylee Olson. “Before, I was just going to kind of head out there, but I have an idea of what I want to do.”

Officials with Norfolk Now say the presentations were a continuation of their efforts to create awareness about local jobs and give students work-based learning opportunities.
