LINCOLN, NE — One of four men convicted of murdering five people at the Norfolk U.S. Bank in 2002 is one step closer to his execution.
The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services announced in a news release today that Jose Sandoval was provided notice of the substances to be employed in his execution by lethal injection. The DCS will administer Diazepam, Fentanyl Citrate, Cisatracurium Besylate and Potassium Chloride intravenously to complete the lethal injection.
No date has been set for the execution. Nebraska Administrative Code requires the DCS to notify the condemned inmate of the substances at least 60 days prior to the Attorney General’s request to the Nebraska Supreme Court for an execution warrant.
The DCS is in possession of the substances and has tested them.
The 38-year-old Sandoval was sentenced to death on five counts of first degree murder stemming from the 2002 shooting. He is housed at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institute.
The Nebraska ACLU issued a response statement Thursday afternoon. Executive Director Danielle Conrad said this is the first time this combination of drugs would be used in the United States.
"We are horrified that the Nebraska Department of Corrections plans to use Jose Sandoval as a test subject for an untested and experimental lethal injection cocktail," Conrad said.
The last execution in Nebraska was in 1997 when Robert Williams was electrocuted.
