Nebraska City, Red Oak and Dunbar see highest snow totals

NEBRASKA CITY – Ice and snow mucked up commutes Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, and forced the closure of local schools, business and agencies.

Snow began falling at the Nebraska City airport at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday and lasted shortly after 4 a.m. Wednesday. Temperatures fell from 20 to 12 degrees overnight. Wind gusts of 28 mph were reported around 8 p.m.

The Nebraska State Patrol worked 60-plus weather-related incidents in southern and eastern Nebraska. Highway 75 at the Highway 8 junction south of Dawson in Richardson County was closed for three hours due to an accident Tuesday afternoon.

Several vehicles needed assistance along Central Ave. and S. 11th St. in Nebraska City after getting stuck in more than nine inches snow.

The majority of schools in southeast Nebraska, southwest Iowa and northwest Missouri elected to cancel classes for the second consecutive day.

Conestoga High School Principal David Friedli says they planned for a late start on Wednesday, but ultimately decided to call off classes due to hazardous travel conditions.

“Our uniqueness is Beaver Lake and we’ve got some really tight turns and up-and-down hills. Beaver Lake does a great job, but mother nature has not been kind the last 72 hours. It’s ice under the snow and it drifted a lot more than we thought today.”

The Plattsmouth and Malvern regions saw six inches of snow. Glenwood had a total of five and a half inches.

Wednesday was expected to be the nicest day of the week: mostly sunny with southwest winds that usher in a quick warmup. Highs were forecast top out in the mid- to upper 20s.

Arctic air returns on Thursday, along with biting winds. Temperatures are expected to steadily drop and wind chills again will be below zero.
