Middle Schoolers Get Hands On at S.T.E.M. Camp

COLUMBUS - A group of local middle school girls are taking part in a three week S.T.E.M. camp, that culminates with a presentation of their projects on Friday. Central Community College Director of the Entrepreneurship Center Doris Lux says the program is funded by Verizon, and says CCC is one of 15 colleges in the nation selected to receive the funds. Lux says the camp is specifically directed toward middle school girls in rural areas, and showing them the great job opportunities that exist in S.T.E.M. type fields. Lux says staff from companies like Behlen's and the Columbus Community Hospital, spoke with the girls on Wednesday. "I'm trying to bring in real, local people, to emphasize that yes, [these jobs can] be done by girls," says Lux. Projects used the technologies such as 3D printers, 360 degree cameras, and and 3D goggles. Some of the projects included prototypes for voice activated storage shelving, a vacuum that cleans couches, and many more. The projects will be presented by the students, in the North Education Building on Friday, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
