“Getting the Latino community more involved is nothing but a positive for Schuyler."
Knutson is a former educator and is now semi-retired, he says he has the ability to devote lots of time to the city - focusing on managing a limited crew of city workers, oversee the housing market, fixing the city streets, and revitalizing downtown Schuyler. "We're going to have to make some decisions with downtown," says Knutson. He is currently the only candidate to file for mayor. Both Knutson and Reinecke were unsure if anybody would challenge Knutson for the mayor position.
SCHUYLER, Neb. - Longtime Schuyler Mayor Dave Reinecke will not seek re-election and instead he is asking voters to cast their ballot for council president Democrat Jon Knutson.
Reinecke, a Republican who has been mayor since 1998, appointed Knutson to the council in his first term and believes his 18-plus years on the council provides the know-how to lead the city forward.
"It'd be great if Jon was mayor because of his experience," says Reinecke. "We think a lot alike."
Reinecke, told NCN that he thinks it's time for somebody new to take charge in the town of 6,000-plus.
"I never expected to be mayor this long," says Reinecke.
Reinecke made history by appointing two of the three seats to people with Hispanic origin: Antonio Rodriguez and Barbara Raya.
Knutson says that he plans to keep pushing integration in town and is looking to embrace the Hispanic community like Reinecke did.
