Mason City’s Barbara Shepardson Receives DAR Citizenship Award
Barbara Shepardson, right, receives DAR Citizenship Award
MASON CITY—“A shining example of what being a good neighbor is all about,” Carol Sherbeck said it perfectly to describe a woman who wears many hats, Barbara Shepardson. Shepardson has just been awarded the local Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Citizenship Award. Carol Sherbeck and Rita Rosentreader wrote recommendation letters to the DAR, showering Barbara with praise for her efforts to better the Mason City area—and beyond. Barbara does it all. She plants and maintains flowers in Mason City, helps organize volunteers for the mobile food bank, organizes a sewing group that sends items overseas, volunteers at the Red Barn, plays music for two different churches and helps with funeral dinners, and she also finds time to volunteer at the Mason City library. Every year she ventures out of town to wear the white gloves and give her time at the State Fair assisting with the quilt exhibit. DAR member Mary Langrid described Barbara as a “super candidate” to receive the citizenship award. “The DAR, once a year, gives an award for community service…and in Barbara’s case, there’s a great deal for different phases of the community. Her community service extends even beyond our county lines because she has some service with the state fair. She does service for the scenic byways and for her church, for her community. I think she was really a super candidate,” Langrid said. Langrid said Barbara will also be nominated for the citizenship award at the state level. Barbara Shepardson said she did not expect to win the award but happily described what she so willingly does to help her community. “The biggest thing probably is that I do the flowers along the highway on Highway 2 so when you pass through Mason City you’re seeing my handiwork,” Shepardson said. Congratulations Barbara and thank you for all you do!
