Louisiana Man Could Be Facing A Life Sentence For Sexual Assault Of A Child In Custer County

CUSTER COUNTY— Robert E. Edwards Sr., 72 of Louisiana, could be spending the remainder of his life in prison after being found guilty of first degree sexual assault of a child, a class IB felony. According to Custer County District Court records, Edwards Sr. had the complaint filed against him on or about June 19, 2017 for the sexual assault of a child.

For the three days of the trial, that began Monday, February 11, both sides called witnesses, entered evidence to the court, and made arguments to the jury. At the completion of the jury instructions, the jury began deliberation at 4:06 P.M. on Wednesday afternoon and returned 58 minutes later with a guilty verdict.

First degree sexual assault of a child carries a minimum sentence of twenty years in prison and a maximum sentence of life in prison. Following the guilty verdict, the court ordered a presentence investigation to be completed before sentencing on April 18 at 10 A.M. The court also revoked bond and Edwards Sr. was remanded to the custody of the Custer County Sheriff’s Office pending sentencing.
