COLUMBUS - Local organizations combined resources, on Wednesday, to fix up the home of a Columbus family, battling multiple disabilities.
NeighborWorks of Northeast Nebraska (NWNEN) chose to repair and replace certain sections of the home, in an effort to spread kindness during Neighborworks Week (June 2-9).
"We always pick a community project, and this year we decided to do 'Kindness is a Chain Reaction,' and we are spreading cheer throughout the community," says NWNEN Housing Manager Rena Beran.
Beran says they are putting a new roof and gutters on the house, as well as landscaping, painting, and repairing other items around the home.
The owners of the home are both disabled, with the father fighting a rare incurable disease, that causes his immune system to attack his muscles anytime he uses them. The parents also have two children who were diagnosed with autism.
The mother asked to remain unnamed in the article, but shared that she felt blessed to be living in a community such as Columbus, that has supported them through tough times. She added that her husband was homeless in high school, and being able to provide a home for their kids was very important to them. Making this project even more special for their family.
Business/organizations that contributed included; NeighborWorks America, Columbus United Federal Credit Union, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Mike's Repair, Columbus Board of REALTORS, and Paint the Town.
