Liberty Centre Adds Color to Mental Health Awareness

NORFOLK - Northeast Nebraskans are adding some color to mental health recovery. The Liberty Centre hosted its annual Color Your Recovery 5K run on Saturday. The event raises money to help with the Centre’s day-to-day expenses as they help people in the Norfolk area recover from mental illness. But organizers say just bringing the issue of mental health to the forefront is just as, if not more, important. “Mental health doesn’t get the awareness it needs,” said Liberty Centre director Patty Skokan. “Mental health is so important, equally as important as our physical health.” Skokan says the Liberty Centre had record participation this year, with well over 200 runners and walkers getting splashed with color as they navigated the course. “It’s for a great cause, but it’s also a lot of fun,” Skokan said. “People enjoy it and bring their family and friends back the next year.” Skokan says Liberty Centre also extended their outreach for the 5K beyond the City of Norfolk, bringing in more people to help those with mental health needs find their own finish line.
