Holy Activities! Nebraska Extension-Custer County Releases June Jamboree Schedule

Sign up now for the June Jamboree summertime youth activities being conducted by the Nebraska Extension – Custer County Office.  June Jamboree activities are open to any youth. 4-H enrollment is not required to participate in these activities. “Twenty-one activities have been planned for youth of various ages during the month of June,” says Colleen Peterson, Custer County 4-H Aide.

Youth Basic Photography Workshop will be held on Monday, June 3 at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Boys and girls ages 8, by January 1, 2019, and older are invited to attend. In this class, youth will get a basic understanding of the three pieces of the exposure  triangle.

Understanding aperture, shutter speed and ISO will help you understand how to get the picture you want and also what went wrong with the image. This workshop is for YOUTH ONLY! Class is limited to the first 12 paid participants. Pre-registration and payment is required by May 28. Cost of the workshop is $5 per person. Cooking 301 will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow.  Youth ages 8 to 13, by January 1, 2019 are invited to attend Some people won’t try making yeast breads because they think the breads are too difficult to make or that the dough won’t rise properly.  

When you understand and follow some basic techniques for making bread, it’s really quite simple and enjoyable. During this workshop, youth will learn how to make yeast breads and specialty yeast breads. Class is limited to the first 15 paid participants.

Pre-registration and payment is required by May 28. Cost of the workshop is $10 per person. Instructor for this workshop will be Janet Kalinowski, Guest Speaker; Colleen Peterson, 4-H Aide; and Audrey Foster, Summer 4-H Staff.

Fueled For Flight will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the Broken Bow Public Library. Boys and girls in grades K-5, in the Fall of 2019, are invited to attend. Explore how astronauts keep a healthy lifestyle through their nutrition and exercise choices! Registration deadline is May 29. Registration fee is FREE! Instructors for this workshop will be Audrey Foster, Summer 4-H Staff; and Colleen Peterson, 4-H Aide.

Just Outside The Door-Clover Kids will be held Wednesday, June 5, 1:30-3:00 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow for boys and girls who are age 5-7 by January 1, 2019. Participants MUST bring an adult helper. Youth will create a stain painting through using giant water beads, learn about  color, and enjoy a delicious snack!

Registration deadline is May 29. Registration fee is $7.00, which includes all materials for activities. This workshop is limited to 20 participants. Instructors for this workshop will be Audrey Foster, Summer 4-H Staff; and Colleen Peterson, 4-H Aide.

Haddy Jack’s Signs will be held on Thursday, June 6 at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow, 1:00 to 3:30 p.m.  Youth must be age 8-13, by January 1, 2019, to participate in this workshop. Youth will create an original hand painted 8” x 10” wooden banner.

Class is limited to 24 participants. Registration and payment is required by May 28. Cost of the workshop is $14 per person, and includes all supplies and snacks. Instructor for this workshop will be Jen Feik, owner of Haddy Jack’s in Broken Bow.

Plant Investigators will be held Friday, June 70, 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow. This workshop is for youth who are ages 8 to 13, by January 1, 2019. Did you know that plants sweat? Did you know there are different layers in the soil to help plants grow? Come join the Plant Investigators class to learn cool information about plants and how they grow!

Everyone will get a garden plant, and how to grow it in their home gardens or containers for the growing season! Registration deadline is May 31. Registration fee is $10.00 per person. Instructor for this workshop will be David Lott, West Central District Extension Educator in Horticulture.

Pillow Power will be offered on two days…Monday, June 10 or Tuesday, June 11.  Each program will be held at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day. Come learn the basics of sewing through the notions and the sewing machine. Attendees will also construct a pillowcase!  

Registration deadline is June 3 and each session is limited to 5 participants. Registration fee is $15.00 per person. Audrey Foster, Summer 4-H Staff; and Colleen Peterson, 4-H Aide; will be the instructors for this workshop. A Space For Me-Clover Kids will be held Wednesday, June 12, 1:00-2:30 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow for boys and girls who are age 5-7 by January 1, 2019. Participants MUST bring an adult helper. Want to spruce up your room? Youth will create a no-sew pillow, draft stopper, and enjoy a delicious snack!  

Registration deadline is June 7. Registration fee is $15.00, which includes all materials for activities. This workshop is limited to 20 participants. Instructors for this workshop will be Audrey Foster, Summer 4-H Staff; and Colleen Peterson, 4-H Aide.

Mission Moon will be held on Thursday, June 13, 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the Broken Bow Public Library.  Boys and girls in grades K-2, in the Fall of 2019, are invited to attend. Youth will discover what it is like to live on the moon, explore how astronauts meet their basic needs, and create your own moonscapes! Registration deadline is June 6. Registration fee is FREE! Instructors for this workshop will be Audrey Foster, Summer 4-H Staff; and Colleen Peterson, 4-H Aide.

Too Many T’s? will be held Monday, June 17, 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow for boys and girls who are age 9-14 by January 1, 2019. Do you have too many t-shirts in your closet? Explore the realm of upcycling by remaking t-shirts into bags and coasters! Students will also re-design a t-shirt through embellishing the garment through bleaching! (Workshop will not involve sewing with a sewing machine!) 

Registration deadline is June 10. Registration fee is $10.00. Participants are asked to bring two t-shirts.  These will be upcycled, so make sure you are okay with cutting them! One will be used for the bag and the other for the coaster. The embellished t-shirt will be supplied. This workshop is limited to 15 participants. Instructors for this workshop will be Audrey Foster, Summer 4-H Staff; and Colleen Peterson, 4-H Aide.

Teen Cuisine will be held Tuesday, June 18, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow for youth in third grade and above, Fall of 2019. Come learn about Teen Cuisine. You will get to enhance your nutrition, food preparation and cooking skills; learn about food safety and physical activity during our fun day packed with activities.

Registration deadline is June 7. Registration fee is $10.00, which includes all supplies and lunch. This workshop is limited to 20 participants. Instructors for this workshop will be Kayla Hinrichs, Nebraska Extension Educator; Colleen Peterson, 4-H Aide; Audrey Foster, Summer 4-H Staff; Eyerusalem Glendy, Youth Mentor; and Abby Stallbaumer, Youth Mentor.

Plarn! will be held Wednesday, June 19, 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow for boys and girls who are age 8-12 by January 1, 2019. What happens when you combine yarn and plastic? You get Plarn! Youth will experiment with sustainability as they create a craft from Plarn!

The students will also learn how to make their own Plarn! Registration deadline is June 12. Registration fee is $10.00. This workshop is limited to 12 participants. Instructors for this workshop will be Audrey Foster, Summer 4-H Staff; and Colleen Peterson, 4-H Aide.

Design Camp will be held Thursday, June 20 through Friday, June 215 at the State 4-H Camp, Halsey.  4-H’ers must be enrolled in “STEAM Clothing 2 – Simply Sewing” or “STEAM Clothing 3 – A Stitch Further” and be 10 years of age or older to participate in the camp. Youth will get the opportunity to design their own fabric and make it into shorts or a t-shirt dress, create a unique t-shirt, and marble a scarf. The fashionistas will also have the opportunity to enjoy the 4-H camp experience by tubing down the river, zipping down the zip line, and spending a night at the camp.

The camp will begin Thursday, June 20 at 9:00 a.m. CDT and conclude on Friday, June 21 at 4:00 p.m. with a runway style show with everyone modeling their original creation. Registration deadline is June 5. Registration fee is $125 per 4-H’er, which covers all materials and camp costs.

Participants must bring a sewing machine and basic sewing tools. Instructors for the camp will be Shelly Altena, Michelle Garwood, Audrey Foster, Lynn McKinney, Melissa Mracek, and Tessa Reece. Light Up Your Wardrobe will be held Monday, June 24, 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow for boys and girls who are age 10-14 by January 1, 2019.  Have you ever wanted to brighten up your wardrobe? Youth will embellish a bag with LED’s in this workshop that combines textiles with science and design!

Registration deadline is June 17. Registration fee is $20.00. This workshop is limited to 12 participants. Instructors for this workshop will be Audrey Foster, Summer   4-H Staff; and Colleen Peterson, 4-H Aide.

Stories In The Sky will be held on Tuesday, June 25, 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the Broken Bow Public Library. Boys and girls in grades 3-5, in the Fall of 2019, are invited to attend. Youth will use teamwork to learn about and accomplish various activities related to our solar system.

Youth will gain grit as they work together and independently to broaden their knowledge of the solar system and what it is like to be an astronaut!  Registration deadline is June 18. Registration fee is FREE! Instructors for this workshop will be Audrey Foster, Summer 4-H Staff; and Colleen Peterson, 4-H Aide.

Theater Arts-Clover Kids will be held Tuesday, June 25, 1:30-3:00 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow for boys and girls who are age 5-7 by January 1, 2019. Participants MUST bring an adult helper. Students will be introduced to the theater world by creating a clown drawing, participating in charades, and devouring a snack!

All of the experiences will be recorded in a journal by the students! Registration deadline is June 18. Registration fee is $10.00, which includes all materials for activities. Wacky Weaving will be held Wednesday, June 26, 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Sargent Church of Christ in Sargent for boys and girls who are age 9-13 by January 1, 2019. Youth will explore fibers through creating a weaving using an embroidery hoop! Registration deadline is June 19. Registration fee is $10.00. This workshop is limited to 12 participants. Instructors for this workshop will be Audrey Foster, Summer 4-H Staff; and Colleen Peterson, 4-H Aide.

June Jamboree Grand Finale will be held Friday, June 28, 1:00-3:30 p.m. at Tiffany Theater in Broken Bow for boys and girls who are age 5-13 by January 1, 2019. Celebrate the end of June Jamboree by creating puppets and watching a movie at Tiffany Theater…Toy Story 4!

Registration deadline is June 21. Registration fee is $10.00, which includes materials for the activity, 1 movie ticket, and 1 Kids Snack Pack at the concession stand. Parents and siblings are welcome to attend the movie at 2:00 p.m. and pay at the door.  Instructors for this workshop will be Audrey Foster, Summer 4-H Staff; and Colleen Peterson, 4-H Aide.
