Grand Jury Called in Madison County Death
Madison County authorities at the scene where County Attorney Joe Smith says Steven Thomas shot himself
MADISON - A grand jury will be investigating the circumstances after a man died surrounded by Madison County authorities last month. Officials with the Madison County District Court office say that Judge Jame Kube has signed off on convening a grand jury to investigate the May 19th death of Steven Thomas. Madison County Attorney Joe Smith said at the time that Thomas died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after a resident south of Norfolk reported him as a suspicious person. Smith said Thomas was inside his vehicle at the time of his death, while officers from numerous departments were at the scene. By law, a grand jury must be called to investigate any death that happens while law enforcement is present. No timeline was given for the grand jury investigation, which will ultimately determine if any charges related to the incident should be filed in Madison County District Court.
