Grand Isand Pair Critically Injured in Hwy 81/91 Collision

HUMPHREY - The sheriff's office has identified the pair critically injured in a collision at the intersection of Highways 81 and 91 on Wednesday. Thomas Hayes, 71, and Delores Hayes, 69, both of Grand Island, were eastbound on Highway 91 when they attempted to cross the intersection, says the sheriff's office. While in the intersection, their pickup was hit by a southbound semi, driven by Issac George,  28, of Dallas, Texas, says Sheriff Ed Wemhoff. The two vehicles then veered into a third vehicle being driven by Chad Preister, 37, of Columbus, says Wemhoff. Delores and Thomas Hayes were transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha in critical condition, says the sheriff. All persons involved in the accident were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision, and all vehicles were left with $33,000 and more in damage, says the sheriff. Traffic was rerouted through Humphrey while crews worked the scene. Humphrey and Creston Rescue Units, the Nebraska State Patrol, Platte County Sheriff's Office, and Nebraska Department of Roads responded to the scene, and the accident occurred at roughly 11:08 a.m., says Wemhoff. " I previously released information pertaining to an accident at this intersection only two days ago.  This accident becomes the sixth accident at this intersection in just under five weeks.   With warmer weather now upon us and summer travel rearing up, I would like to again ask all motorists as they approach and travel through the Highway 81 - 91 intersection to drive with due caution.  Accidents often occur because one of the drivers simply did not see the other vehicle.  Please take your time, looking several times in both directions, before entering this or any intersection", says Wemhoff.
