Gov’t Shutdown Hits Nebraska Senate Race—Sort of

Omaha, NE.—Washington finger-pointing over the government shutdown is alive and well in the Nebraska Senate race, or not. Incumbent Republican Deb Fischer who says she's "disappointed" with the closing is on the receiving end of the political blame game. Late last night Fischer's Democratic opponent, Jane Raybould, said, "The people of Nebraska will remember Senator Fischer's failure to find compromise..." In earlier comments Raybould went even further accusing Fischer of taking her government paycheck while government services suffer. "That Senator Fischer would let a government shutdown happen under her watch is absolutely unacceptable, said Raybould. "Washington is broken and Senator Fischer is right in the middle of the problem." Fischer has ignored the attacks and has not responded to News Channel Nebraska's request for comment on Raybould's specific charges. After the Senate failed to stop the shutdown Fischer's office did release this 60-word—no mention of Raybould— statement: "I’m disappointed the Senate was unable to work together to fund the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for six years, take care of our military, and keep the government open. I voted for this measure and I am a cosponsor of a bill to extend the CHIP program. I strongly believe we need to get this done for children in Nebraska and across the nation.” Follow Joe on Twitter and Facebook Joe can be heard Thursday’s 8:35 a.m. KLIN Lincoln; Wednesday’s 8 a.m. KUTT Fairbury ; Thursday’s 7-8 a.m. US92 and 8-9 a.m. KNEN Norfolk and 8:55 a.m KBIE 103.1 Nebraska City.
