CRESTON - As a part of a continued effort to learn about ag producers around the state, Governor Pete Ricketts visited the Larson Family Dairy Farm in Creston.
Larson Farms has switched over to an automated milking system, where cows are milked at their own leisure, says Bob Larson.
"They're fed a corn, soy bean pellet kind of pellet mix, that they really crave. Between that and wanting to go in and get milked to relieve the pressure... So they basically go in and milk themselves, and just kind of live in this barn, and have a pretty good quality of life," says Larson.
Ricketts, and State Ag Director Steve Wellman said they were impressed by the Larson Farms operation and are glad to see innovative technologies being used on Nebraska farms.
"They've got the third robotic operation here in our state. So we're taking the tour, seeing how it works, and it is a great example of value added agriculture. It' a fourth generation operation, and it really represents a lot of the great things about Nebraska agriculture," says Ricketts.
"it's very new, very technology driven, and that's great to see. I think it's a great opportunity to continue on for their family, and bring in the new generation that's still in school here, but still very involved. Just a great example of Nebraska Agriculture," says Wellman.
Larson Farms, just north of Creston, will be celebrating it's 100th birthday next year.
