Free Tree Giveaway hosted by Simple Living Discussion Group

BROKEN BOW—Local book discussion group, Simple Living, has decided to celebrate this month’s Earth Day and Arbor Day holidays by giving away free trees.

The members of Simple Living received a community service grant from Thrivent Financial and decided to encourage community members to plant trees and get involved when it comes to our local environment.

Anyone interested in planting a fruit tree, nut tree, or shrub is encouraged to call Polly Blackburn at 253-326-3104. The tree giveaway will take place on Thursday, April 19 from 12 to 2 p.m. Call as soon as possible, giveaway based on first come first served.

“We have received a small community service grant through Thrivent so we have decided to offer free fruit trees, or nut trees, or shrubs for Earth Day or Arbor Day,” Blackburn said.

Giveaway options include semi-dwarf fruit trees, a variety of nut trees, berry bushes, or wildlife shrubs. Blackburn said the fruit trees grow to between 15-20 feet and are ornamental but also perfect for increasing productivity in your yard.

If you are not able to plant a tree, Blackburn encourages everyone to make a difference by staying up-to-date with the local park board and city council, and spend time outdoors this spring. She also mentioned that Broken Bow is Tree City USA certified.

“Earth Day is April 22 and Arbor Day is April 26. So, it would be a nice thing if you wanted to do it as a family, plant a tree together and increase the productivity of your yard,” Blackburn said.

Simple Living invites members to join its discussion group. Members discuss sustainability and action-oriented books. It meets on Thursday afternoons. Those interested are invited to contact Polly.
