Omaha, NE.—From the moment the Flood of 2019 hit Nebraska the state’s all-Republican contingent on Capitol Hill promised federal aid was a must-have.
But while pushing to get federal disaster aid for their own backyard Nebraska Senators and Congressmen, with one exception, have been unwilling to give it to folks thousands of miles away, specifically voting against aid to Hurricane victims.

Asked to justify his anti-Hurricane, pro-flood money choice Congressman Jeff Fortenberry gives the most direct answer telling NCN, “We take disaster packages on a case-by-case basis depending on the merits of the proposed package.”
“Nebraskans are suffering under dire circumstances and I will work to ensure federal disaster programs are funded appropriately to meet Nebraska’s needs. As with any disaster supplemental bill considered by Congress, I will advocate for it to be paid for with corresponding spending cuts wherever possible. In addition, a number of tax considerations such as filing extensions are often afforded to disaster victims by Congress, and I will work to include these for Nebraskans where appropriate through my role on the Ways and Means Committee.”
Omaha area Congressman Don Bacon has recently voted for federal disaster aid to Hurricane victims.
