Extra Troopers to Patrol Roads During Eclipse

NORFOLK – Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to flock to the path of totality for Monday’s eclipse.

That many more people on the roads has the Nebraska State Patrol making sure everyone will be safe.

State Patrol officials say staying safe on Monday means making sure you know ahead of time what your viewing plan will be.

“Always pre-plan,” said Troop B Captain Paul Hattan. “We would ask that you turn your headlights on. Some of the automatic lights can be delayed so they might not come, especially since we’re talking only a couple of minutes. So we would ask people for that day to have their lights on so they’re prepared.”

Capt. Hattan says drivers’ traffic patterns will be different on Monday. He says the Patrol knows that not everyone will make to a viewing location and might be on the road when the eclipse happens. Hattan says to avoid using the shoulder of the road for eclipse viewing.

“Try to find a safe spot where you can park,” Hattan said. “There are plenty of places out there. Social media, Game and Parks and Nebraska Tourism are putting a lot of different spots out there where you can pull off safely and view the eclipse.”

Hattan says the Nebraska State Patrol will have extra troopers on the road Monday, but mostly along the I-80 corridor. They’ll also be utilizing their Patrol helicopters to make sure everyone is enjoying the eclipse safely.
