Fiery Fatality On Alternate Flood Route South of Nebraska City

NEBRASKA CITY – The Otoe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal accident on Highway 75 south of Nebraska City.

Fire crews were dispatched at 11:45 p.m. to a truck on fire. They were informed enroute that the situation involved an accident with a vehicle.

Firefighters extinguished fires in the cab of the truck and a Toyota. There were also grass fires on both sides of the highway pushed by wind gusts of 24 mph.

Investigators say the truck driver sustained some injury, but was able to escape the flames.

The driver of the Toyota died at the scene. He is believed to have crossed the center line into the path of the truck and semi-trailer.

Sheriff’s deputies described severe impact damage to both vehicles.

Traffic on both lanes was blocked through 4:15 a.m.

Highway 75 has been an alternate route since flooding closed Interstate 29.
