BROKEN BOW—Approximately one million children are enrolled in Head Start and Early Head Start programs across the nation. The Central Nebraska Community Action Partnership (CNCAP) works with families across 22,985 square miles and serves many local families in the area. Early Head Start Center Based Infant & Toddler Child Development Centers are located in four different counties, including Custer.

Family Outreach Case Manager Tiffany Foley of Broken Bow told KCNI/KBBN that families with children six weeks to age three are eligible for Early Head Start programs, which focus on educational activities, development, wellness checks, children with disabilities, and parent and family involvement. Families participate in monthly meetings for both home and center-based programs.

“They offer nutritional meals and snacks, developmentally appropriate activities for the kids, services for children with disabilities. They can bring in occupational therapists or physical therapists. We have a nurse on staff who can check vision, hearing, hemoglobin, and lead screenings also,” Foley said.

To assist with these types of programs for our area youth, Early Head Start and Runza have partnered to host a fundraiser on Thursday, March 22 from 5-8 p.m.

“This fundraiser is for our Dollar per Child. It’s a national advocacy council and what they do is they ensure that every single Head Start child, family, and program has their voice represented in the halls of Congress, before the White House, and in our state Capital.

Funds raised between 5 and 8 p.m. will help make up the main source of funding for Head Start’s advocacy in Washington. Runza will donate 15% of sales during the March 22 fundraiser.

“Joyce and Kevin Richardson have been gracious enough to partner with us for this event so we do appreciate that,” Foley said.

Runza is located on east Highway 2 in Broken Bow (709 East S East St, Broken Bow, NE 68822).

Families must fill out an application to qualify for the income-based program. Call 308-872-6540 to get more information. CNCAP offers many programs including Woman/Infant/Children, Weatherization, Commodities for Ages 60 and up, Outreach Department, and Early Head Start.
