Omaha, NE.—The head of the Nebraska Democratic Party is under friendly fire today, told to resign for "repeatedly crossing the line" in the governor's race.
Chairwoman Jane Kleeb is accused of running a behind the scenes campaign for governor and using the party's nuts and bolts to clear the field.
As News Channel Nebraska first reported Kleeb—in order to "protect the party brand"— is considering putting her name on the primary ballot for the state's top job.
According to Democrat Vanessa Ward's campaign for governor, "It has been a poorly kept secret that Kleeb had polling done last year weighing her potential candidacy, but has been unable to gain an adequate commitment of financial support."
Asked to respond to the charges, Kleeb tells News Channel Nebraska, "I'm not commenting."
Preston Love, 2nd in command for Ward, also fired at Kleeb, "Jane needs to either announce for governor immediately, or get back to work."
According to Love, the Democratic Party is at a crossroads.
Ward is expected to formally announce her bid for governor Monday in the aftermath of a News Channel Nebraska exclusive report noting Ward's harsh criticism of the Democratic Party and several missed votes over the past decade.
Asked by News Channel Nebraska if Ward was a "viable" candidate for governor Kleeb said, "When we talk viability obviously the first thing is money and the second thing is name I-D. I’m not so sure she or anybody else that has considered running for governor on the Democratic side has that yet."
