Daylight saving time, Husker spring practice are signs that spring is just around the corner

Regardless of what the landscape says, with all its snow and icicles, the Earth is continuing to revolve around the sun, which means spring in Omaha is inevitable.

  • Daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m. Sunday. (You lose an hour of sleep.)
  • Spring starts in less than two weeks (March 20).
  • Husker spring football practice began this week.
  • You can (sometimes) hear the birds chirping when you go outside in the morning.
  • The honey-do list is getting longer, so this weekend’s Omaha Home Show, Friday through Sunday at the CHI Health Center, is just in time.
  • Some stores have set out their summertime toys — think noodles for playing in a pool or lake.
  • Spring fashions are arriving in boutiques, and floral prints are everywhere.
  • Everybody has seed packets out, and it’s not too early to start planning for this year’s garden.
  • Peregrine falcons have returned to the State Capitol in Lincoln. Could chicks be next?
  • The sun’s out when you go to work … and when you come home.

Still, winter isn’t leaving easily.

  • The latest long-term forecast calls for an increased chance of generally colder than normal weather through the end of March.
  • Creighton University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln have canceled, delayed or relocated baseball games that were to be played on their home fields.
  • Omaha’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade was supposed to be Saturday. But it was postponed one week by, you guessed it, weather.
  • And the season opener for trout fishing at Two Rivers State Recreation Area has been put on hold. The lake had been scheduled to open Saturday; a new date will be announced later.
