Crews Battle Fire at CMI in East Columbus

COLUMBUS - Fire crews were called to the second fire at  a Columbus business in 3 days. Columbus Fire Chief Daniel Miller says the fire department was called by Platte County Deputies to a fire at Columbus Metal Industries, on East 15th Street, on the East side of Columbus at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday. Miller said mutual aid was provided by Schuyler Fire, and said crews were on scene, in the cold temperatures, until 1:30 a.m. Miller didn’t have an exact estimate on how much damage was dealt, but said there was significant damage in the interior of the building, specifically to some of the companies manufacturing equipment. Miller said they do not know exactly what started the fire, but say the believe it may have been caused by a piece of equipment malfunctioning. This is the second fire at a Columbus business within a 3 day span. Stenger plumbing, on the southwest side of the 33rd Avenue Viaduct, burned down in an early morning fire on Tuesday. That fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s Office.
