County Looking at Possible New Building Purchase

COLUMBUS - In an effort to create a proper meeting space at the new county extension building downtown, supervisors are looking at the feasibility of purchasing a new building. The county purchased a new building for the extension office to move into at a cost of $172,000. The county has currently been looking at ways to modify the basement so that it meets fire codes, and will work as a meeting room. Platte County Chairman Jerry Engdahl says the costs to make the basement meet codes and to renovate it to work properly as a meeting space came in much higher than expected. Some bids topped over $500,000. County Supervisors went into a closed session on Tuesday, during their regularly scheduled meeting, in order to discuss the issue. Following the closed session, Engdahl stated that the council has decided to work with an architect, who will determine how feasible it would be to purchase the building adjacent to there current building on the west side. With the cost of gutting the building and converting it into space that would suite their needs, says the chairman. Engdahl says they are looking at this option, because it may be cheaper than the cost of remodeling the basement. The main floor of the building they currently own is move-in ready. This is a developing story.
