Columbus High Schoolers Spread Word About Domestic Violence

COLUMBUS, Neb. - A group of Columbus high school students recently helped spread word around town about the prevalence of domestic violence in the community. October marks Domestic Violence Awareness month and Center for Survivors has been busy spreading awareness about domestic violence for the past week and a half. Sunday night, 44 teenage members of the group Revolution, led by Abbie Tessendorf of the Center for Survivors, chalked the sidewalk and painted windows in order to let the harsh realities of domestic violence stand out to the entire community. "The Revolution group decided they wanted to take an active role in Domestic Violence Awareness month and they wanted to do that by chalking," says Revolution leader Abbie Tessendorf. The group that focuses on domestic violence, as well as sexual assault prevention, chalked phrases such as 'Love Shouldn't Hurt' and 'End the Violence' in front of the Center for Survivors facility in Columbus. Tessendorf says she hopes the chalking will allow passers-by to notice some of the startling facts about domestic violence that they do not already know. "The Center for Survivors had over 3,000 contacts with victims last year. Considering we have a pretty small community, I think that can be pretty shocking for people," says Tessendorf. The center has also hosted a vigil, a guest speaker for high school students, a round-up fundraiser at Super Saver and purple cupcakes at Doozy's, all a part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
