Class A Championship Game Produces a Thrilling Finish

The high school football season came to an end Tuesday as three more championships were decided. The best game of this year’s championships was the last one. Omaha North came back from 13 points down in the 4th quarter to defeat Kearney in the Class A title game 27-20. With the score tied at 20, Kearney had a chance to take the lead with 1:05 to go in the game but a 23-yard field goal attempt by Gabe Heins hit the left upright and was no good. That opened the door for Omaha North. North would put together an 8 play 80-yard drive in just 47 seconds as running back Zander Gray would score on a 17-yard touchdown run with 18 seconds remaining to help the Vikings claim the Class A state title. Gray finished with 25 carries for 173 yards but was outdone by teammate Milton Sargbah who had 20 carries for 235 yards. Quarterback Kannon Koster led the way for Kearney with 92 yards rushing and 68 yards passing.

Norfolk Catholic claimed the Class C1 title with a 35-0 shutout victory over Boone Central Newman Grove. Norfolk Catholic was led by Dylan Kautz who finished with 193 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns.

The C2 championship was a defensive struggle well into the third quarter until Yutan scored 21 points in the final 3:37 of the quarter to break the game open. Yutan went on to defeat Centennial by a score of 27-6.
