COLUMBUS, Neb. - The Columbus city council approved a resolution on Monday that would help the city build the first enclosed horseshoe facility in Nebraska.
The council unanimously approved a grant application from the Land and Water Conservation Fund program. If the city receives the grant, it would cover the half the cost of a $400,000 horseshoe facility at Frontier Park, located east of town, just west of the Armed Services Readiness Center off East 14th Ave.
If built, the facility would hold 24 courts on the south side of the park, with an enclosed roof, concrete floors and lighting. The park could be host of statewide and regional horseshoe tournaments, as there is currently no facilities in Nebraska with an enclosed roof.
The council meeting agenda says that local horseshoe club president Rex Robison says there has been an increased interest in horseshoes recently in the state.
City administrator for Columbus Tara Vasicek confirmed at the council meeting that the city has budgeted $200,000 for the project.
The city also plans on building a bathroom complex, similar to the one just approved at Bradshaw Park, at Frontier Park. A design layout also shows possible tennis and basketball courts, along with a playground, at the new park.
