Carl French Finishes Term On Broken Bow School Board; 2-Year, $155,000 Contract For Superintendent

BROKEN BOW— Carl French finished his term out on Monday as part of the Broken Bow School Board. Monday, December 17 was the final board meeting for 2018 and was also the final board meeting for French who was presented a plaque by Superintendent Darren Toby for his many years of service. Members of the board thanked French for his four years and noted that Carl is a person who will make a decision that may be difficult, but he does what is necessary for the benefit of the school district.

“Carl was somebody that made a decision and stuck by his decision and that goes a long ways for someone that’s running a school district to know where your board members stand so I appreciate that,” said Superintendent Toby. “He’s done a lot of great things not everybody agrees with everything you do as a board member or as administrator, but that is part of the deal. He definitely will be missed. He’s done a great job.”

The meeting itself contained a shorter agenda with Jeff Ellis, Broken Bow Activities Director, talking about district accolades and congratulating Emily Jonas as she placed first in District FFA in Junior Public Speaking. Ellis also congratulated the bowling team on their runner up finish at state and also talked a little about the winter sports season which is off to a great start.

Broken Bow Principal, Rusty Kluender, also gave credit to Angie Palmer and the personal finance teams as they competed very well and had top 20 finishes in the personal finance challenges.

There were only two actionable items on the agenda, with the first accepting the audit report that conducted in the previous weeks. Darren Toby was happy to announce to the board and the public that audit report was clean and the board voted to accept the report.

The other actionable item was the Superintendent contract which the board did go into closed session for over an hour to discuss. When the meeting was re-opened for the public, the board had decided to give Darren Tobey a two-year $155,000 contract with two bonus incentives. The two bonus incentives are $10,000 each with one related to academic standards and the other a financial driven incentive, both which must be completed within a year.

The board decided to hold a board retreat at 5 P.M., prior to the work session at 7:30 P.M. on January 7 to tour the school facilities. The regular board meeting will take place on January 21 at 7:30 P.M. where newly elected board member Tim Chancellor will be sworn in.
