Beatrice Dog Park Awarded Grant for Upgrade
"We would sure like some play equipment!"
BEATRICE – Beatrice is apparently one of only 25 cities in the country that will receive grant funding for its dog run park, located off South 6th Street near the river. The community is a recipient of a $5,000 grant from the 2017 PetSafe “Bark For Your Park” grant program. PetSafe received over 200 applications this year, and Beatrice was selected as one of ten cities to receive $5,000 of commercial-grade dog park equipment from UltraSite , a Playcore Company….for the Big Blue Pet Park. The local park was built in 2003, and has over three acres of fenced-in space for residents to bring their canines to play and socialize.  Beatrice Public Properties Director Mark Pethoud says the park gets a lot of use by dogs and their owners. The funding for the Big Blue Pet Park in Beatrice will help with installation of new play equipment.  Pethoud says City Administrator Tobias Tempelmeyer learned of the grant program online, and the city made application to it. Beatrice and Columbia, Missouri were among the ten cities named to receive park upgrade awards.  Five cities are receiving funding for new dog parks, including Kansas City, Kansas.   Ten other communities are getting park maintenance awards, including Norman, Oklahoma and Colorado Springs, Colorado. The “Bark for Your Park” program was launched nationwide in 2011, with PetSafe working to create more off-leash dog parks around the country.   The 25 grants awarded in this year’s program total over $275,000.
