Arizona man dies in two-vehicle crash southwest of Columbus

A 58-year-old man has died in a head-on crash on U.S. Highway 30 near Duncan, Nebraska.

Charles Matthies, of Green Valley, Arizona, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a report from the Platte County Sheriff’s Office. The crash occurred about 5 p.m. Wednesday a mile east of Duncan.

Duncan is about nine miles southwest of Columbus.

Investigators determined that Matthies was eastbound in a 2003 Ford pickup truck when the vehicle crossed the center line and collided with a westbound semitrailer truck hauling a load of cattle.

The driver of the 2004 Peterbilt semi, Nathan Fischer, 32, of Menno, South Dakota, was not injured in the crash. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

The pickup and the semi were both totaled, but the trailer remained intact. The cattle were unloaded and moved to a local yard until the owner could be contacted for other arrangements.
