Area Athletes Help Wayne State Rugby Teams Compete for National Title

The Wayne State Rugby men’s and women’s teams moved a step closer to a potential national title in the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) tournament last Sunday at the Wayne Rugby Park. The women’s team moved forward in its defense of last year’s 15 on 15 national championships by dominating Colorado College 48-19. Wayne State will play Gustavus Adolphus College of St. Peter, Minnesota in the semifinals Dec. 2nd in Atlanta. The winner will face either Bentley University or York College of York Pennsylvania for the championship the following day. The women’s team includes Corinne Grint, daughter of Cory and Kristy Grint of Sargent.

The Wayne State men’s team avenged an earlier loss to Creighton by outlasting the Bluejays 36-31 to move on to next spring’s Elite Eight against the winner of a region including teams from Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. The Elite Eight matchup will be played in Wayne next spring on Saturday, March 24, 2018. The men’s team includes Mitchell Burnett, son of Mitch and Jessica Burnett of Anselmo.
