ANSLEY, Neb. (AP) — A central Nebraska school paid $650,000 to settle a lawsuit over the alleged rape of a 15-year-old disabled student during a basketball game.
Ansley Public Schools was sued by the victim’s mother, who claimed in the federal lawsuit the school did not do enough to protect her daughter from the 14-year-old boy, who had a documented history of threatening to rape students, The Lincoln Journal-Star reported.
The girl, who receives special education services for an intellectual and unspecified secondary disability, was raped in 2017 while attending a basketball game at the school, according to the lawsuit.
The boy went through the juvenile court system and was removed from the school, which is about 11 miles east of Broken Bow.
The lawsuit said the boy had constant supervision during the school day but school officials didn’t have a plan to supervise him during school events. It also alleged school officials did not investigate reports of the boy’s violent threats.
The lawsuit was dismissed last week as part of the settlement.
