All-Star Football Player Trystin Gielissen Injured in Car Accident, Hyannis to Host Benefit

HYANNIS— A spaghetti lunch is scheduled for Sunday, July 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to benefit Trystin Gielissen. Recent Hyannis High School graduate Trystin Gielissen was scheduled to play in this summer’s Nebraska-Wyoming Six-Man All-Star Shootout game last weekend, but he never made it. On Wednesday, June 20, while driving from Hyannis to Albion, Gielissen was in a two-vehicle accident on Highway 2 a few miles east of Mullen. Hooker County Sheriff Wynn Wiens told KCNI/KBBN that the 18-year-old Hyannis man was taken via life flight to a Kearney hospital in critical condition after the “near head-on” collision. Sheriff Wiens said the accident occurred approximately 11:30 a.m. Mountain Time and that Hooker County Sheriff’s Office, Thomas County, Grant County, Mullen Fire and Rescue, and Bradshaw Fire crews were all on the scene. The Hyannis community has rallied in support of Gielissen and his family. According to the Trystin Gielissen Support Page on Facebook, the 2018 graduate is facing a brain injury. Gielissen’s mother posted on Facebook that Trystin was able to wiggle his extremities and follow some commands given by his nurse on Wednesday, June 27. Trystin remains in serious condition. The Hyannis FFA Chapter is hosting a free-will donation spaghetti lunch on Sunday, July 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with all proceeds going to the family to help with medical expenses. The event will take place at the Hyannis Hotel (102 Main Ave, Hyannis, NE 69350). FFA Instructor Tim Davis said Trystin is a great kid and comes from a great family. “I had Trystin in class last year. Great student, he was fairly active in the FFA as well as a, you know, outstanding athlete as well. It’s a very small community in Hyannis so you know everybody even if you don’t have them in class, you still know every kid. Everybody is pulling together to do what they can to help out,” Davis said. Hyannis Football Coach Lance Braun said he has seen some amazing things happen regarding the community’s support and sharing of Facebook posts and fundraisers in support of the family. A BBQ benefit was held last weekend and a benefit supper, auction, basketball and golf tournaments are tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 14. Trystin’s mother posted on Facebook Wednesday, June 27: “We have a very long road to recovery and need your continued support. I’m sure we will have our ups and downs and it will be very tough but I have solid proof my boy is in there, he hears us and he understands simple commands. We feel your prayers and the presence of God with us!! God continues to have Trystin in his hands and work His miracles.”
