Ag Society Breaks Down the Numbers for Single Day Events

CUSTER COUNTY—Averaging around $220 net income for some recent one-day events, the Ag Society discussed rates for use of the facility. During Thursday’s meeting, Cory Palmer and Grounds Manager JJ Marten broke down the costs of hosting various events, finding that single-day events are not near as profitable.

Palmer stated “the stall barn is where the money is made,” referring to multiday events which usually involve the renting of stalls and electrical hookups. Marten figured a net of $1,400 per night for use of the stall barn during multiday events, already taking expenses into account.

After much discussion, Palmer made a motion to charge $250 to move roping boxes out of the indoor arena (Building 19) for one-day events. Scott Reynolds seconded and the motion passed. At this time, multiday events will not be charged for moving the roping boxes.

Discussion of moving the roping boxes revolved around expenses, manpower, and also making sure the fairgrounds is serving the community and event producers. “We got to do it [provide service at events] for the community, the solution is to get the [new] stall barn built,” Marten said. The future stall barn will house about 60 stalls.

Marten also reported that new manure baskets are in the works and that a 2008 gator was recently purchased for $3,900. New LED lights are being installed throughout the grounds and storm damage repair is ongoing, according to Becky Pearson.

The Ag Society recently received a $22,500 grant from the Custer County Tourism Committee, this money will go toward the stall barn. The Custer County Foundation awarded $2,500 to go toward the new crow’s nest in the Trotter Arena.

Events Coordinator Michelle Nelson was not present but submitted a report that she has been preparing for the winter ball (January 27) and other 2018 events. She has also looked into a credit card machine for the fairgrounds.

Sonya Atkins said, “it is up to us to take advantage of the benefits” offered through the League of Agricultural and Equine Centers. The board passed a motion to become a member for $290.

After a couple failed nominations, Ron Chytka accepted and was voted as the new Treasurer. Kent Nelson will continue to serve as President, Travis Schauda as Vice President, and Scott Reynolds as Secretary.

A special planning meeting will be held on January 7 at 5 p.m. The meeting adjourned at 8:52 p.m.
