BROKEN BOW – Adams Land and Cattle (ALCC) is excited to be sharing their nutrient rich and organic compost with local gardeners during their first ever Adams Compost Days. Custer County residents are encouraged to bring buckets and a shovel and stop by the entrance of the south lot feedlot on May 4 from 8:00 a.m. to Noon, May 5 from Noon to 3:00 p.m., May 18 from 8:00 a.m. to Noon, and May 19 from Noon to 3:00 p.m.

Through a partnership with Y-Bar Enterprises, manure from cattle at Adams is broken down and turned into a valuable compost product that increases the nutrients and water-holding capacity of soils. The material is turned 3-5 times, which allows the surface area to be exposed to oxygen and the raw material to quickly heat over 120 degrees, which is the temperature needed to kill any weed seeds. The end product is a nutrient rich and odor-less compost.

“With our continued focus on sustainability and recycling natural resources, the composting process creates a great product for the health of the soil,” said Abram Babcock, president of Adams. “We know that many of our neighbors enjoy planting gardens and we thought this would be a great way to give back to our community.”

In coordination with their Compost Days, Adams Land and Cattle will have an information table at the Third Thursday on the square in Broken Bow on May 16 from 5-7 p.m. Additionally, their employees will be hosting a children’s activity that evening, where kids will be able to plant seed pots to take home to their gardens.

Compost is available May 4 from 8:00 a.m. to Noon, May 5 from Noon to 3:00 p.m., May 18 from 8:00 a.m. to Noon, and May 19 from Noon to 3:00 p.m. near the entrance of the south feedlot, located 3.5 miles south of Broken Bow on Highway 21. Gardeners will need to bring their own shovels and containers to transport their compost. Learn more about the Adams Compost Days on their Facebook page.
