11th Street Accidents As Traffic Bypasses Interstate 29

NEBRASKA CITY – The closing of the Highway 2 bridge at Nebraska City on Friday evening has brought some unusual traffic to Nebraska City.

On Monday, a Hyundai Santa Fe driven by 69-year-old Michael Baxter of Council Bluffs, left south 11th Street and crashed into an embankment at the bottom of a drainage ditch near the Walmart driveway.

A police accident report says Baxter may have lost consciousness before leaving the road. He was taken to CHI Health St. Mary’s.

Police also report a Ford pickup driven by 69-year-old Ivan Smith of Lotteyville, Kan., was hit from behind while slowing in traffic on 11th Street.
