Trev Alberts, athletic director at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, has told coaches and staffers in his department that he will not be a candidate for the athletic director job at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Alberts sent an email to numerous members of his staff Wednesday morning saying that he has told the search firm involved in the Husker search that he will not compete for the job after “some prayerful consideration.”

Considerable speculation revolved around Alberts, a former Husker and NFL player who has headed UNO’s athletic department for eight years. He transitioned the Maverick athletic teams to Division I, a move that involved the controversial termination of the Mavs’ football and wrestling teams.

Alberts said in his email that there is “unfinished business at UNO, and I remain committed to working as hard as possible to realizing those goals.”

He said in the email there had been “much speculation and conjecture about my interest and candidacy from local media and others.”

He said he was contacted by the search firm to interview for the job but that he has “not pursued or interviewed for any job” in his eight years at UNO. He said he doesn’t plan to change that at this time.

“I continue to be honored to serve alongside our amazing team,” he said in the email.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln confirmed Thursday that it will pay Turnkey Sports & Entertainment $125,000 to help find a replacement for Shawn Eichorst, who was fired Sept. 21.

Turnkey is a search firm based out of New Jersey. The firm has helped other schools — including North Carolina, Ohio State, USC, Wake Forest, Arizona State, Miami, Georgetown, Texas and Oregon — in searches.

Nebraska is also paying Interim Athletic Director Dave Rimington $50,000 for every month he holds that position. His agreement with the university is for up to 60 days, the university announced.
