Three Nebraska wrestlers gain All-America honors at NCAA wrestling championships

CLEVELAND — Three Huskers secured All-America status Friday night at the NCAA wrestling championships.

After losing a one-point decision in the quarterfinals early Friday, junior Tyler Berger won twice in the consolation bracket at 157 pounds to become an All-American for the second straight year. At 184, freshman Taylor Venz won three consolation matches to become an All-American.

Another freshman, CJ Red at 141, became an All-American by pinning defending national champion Dean Heil of Oklahoma State in the round of 12.

Those three will wrestle for placement on Saturday. It’s the seventh straight season that the Huskers have had multiple All-Americans.

Just missing out on All-America status was Isaiah White at 165 as he lost in a tiebreaker in the round of 12. NU teammates Colton McCrystal and Eric Schultz bowed out earlier in the day.

In the team standings, NU has 34 points and is in 14th place. Penn State leads, followed by Ohio State and Iowa. Iowa freshman Spencer Lee will wrestle in the 125-pound final Saturday night.
