Olivia Ferrell strikes out nine for Huskers

CONROE, Texas — Olivia Ferrell struck out nine in six innings as Nebraska beat Lamar 6-4 at the Lone Star College Classic on Saturday.

For the second straight day, the Huskers (2-2) split a pair of games against the Cardinals (1-3) and Texas Tech (3-0), losing to the Red Raiders 4-1.

Bri Cassidy led the Huskers against Lamar, going 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, and Alyvia Simmons had a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Simmons broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning with a leadoff solo shot. The Huskers added another run in the inning when Rylie Unzicker scored on a throwing error.

After Lamar cut its deficit to 3-2, the Huskers added three runs in the fifth.

Texas Tech pitchers Missy Zoch and Erin Edmoundson combined to shut down the Huskers in the later game. Zoch struck out eight and allowed five hits and a run in 4 2⁄3 innings, while Edmoundson struck out five in 2 1⁄3 hitless innings.

The Huskers will face UNO at 9 a.m. Sunday in their final game of the tournament.
