Nebraska outfielder Jaxon Hallmark parlayed a standout opening weekend into Big Ten Player of the Week honors, the league announced Monday.
The sophomore outfielder from Midland, Texas, went 8 for 18 (.444) with 10 RBIs, five runs scored and a stolen base across four games against UC Riverside. He also threw 2/3 of a scoreless inning in his first collegiate pitching appearance.
Hallmark injured his wrist during summer ball and struggled offensively during the preseason, NU coach Darin Erstad said. But he went 4 for 5 in the season opener and added a 3-for-4 effort Saturday night to help the Huskers win three of their first four games.
“Even if my offense isn’t up to par because I’ve been out for a little bit, it’s going to be fine because my teammates are going to pick me up,” Hallmark said last week before the series.
A Husker earned Big Ten POY accolades once last year, when now-graduated Scott Schreiber was honored April 9.
Nebraska begins a four-game set against defending national champion Oregon State on Thursday at 2 p.m. in Surprise, Arizona.
