Nebraska Special Teams Coordinator Mike Dawson Visits With the Media

Nebraska outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator Mike Dawson met with members of the media following day four of fall camp Monday. Dawson spoke on Monday’s practice and the start of fall camp.

“It was a great day working at this thing,” Dawson said. “Seeing some good improvement coming off the ball. The guys are doing a nice job at getting to the edge so I am pleased with that part of it. We are still going to continue to get more physical in the run game. That’s going to be a goal of ours. We have to keep working on that piece of it but we will keep going.”

Dawson also commented on the special teams’ progress.

“Those guys have to do a good job,” he said. “You have to have good guys on the punt team, the field goal, PAT team. We have to do a great job on being able to place the ball and get that thing booted on the kickoff coverage. And then our punt has to be located. We can’t just spray them all over the place. We have to be exact in our execution just like every other phase.”

He continued to discuss the importance of special teams and the approach he is taking during fall camp to develop the group.

“We have had four good days of work as far as the scheme stuff goes with the four core groups talking about the coverage and the return unit’s techniques and fundamentals,” Dawson said. “We have been able to hit the specialists a couple of different times. Working the battery of the field goal (and) extra-point team. Guys getting the snaps, the holds being clean, getting the ball through the upright. So that has been pleasant. We have had some kickoff work so that’s been good.”

The Huskers will take their first day off of fall camp on Tuesday before returning to the practice field Wednesday morning.
