Nebraska softball opens home slate with doubleheader split

LINCOLN — Nebraska opened the home portion of its softball season Saturday by splitting a doubleheader with Wichita State.

The Huskers dropped the opener 6-2 before bouncing back in the nightcap for a 3-1 victory before an announced 928 at Bowlin Stadium.

Nebraska took a 2-0 lead in the opener when catcher Ally Riley drove in first baseman Madi Unzicker and left fielder Gina Metzler with a two-out single to right field in the bottom of the second inning. Unzicker had led off with a triple and Metzler reached second on a Shocker error.

Wichita State sent 10 batters to the plate in the third inning and scored four runs. The big blow was a three-run home run by Madison Perrigan. The Shockers added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings off losing pitcher Kaylan Jablonski.

The Huskers turned things around in the second game, in which all the scoring took place in the fourth inning. WSU (8-8) got its lone run off winning pitcher Olivia Ferrell in the top of the inning.

Ferrell, a freshman from Elkhorn South, scattered seven hits and struck out two on the way to improving her record to 5-0. The teams will wrap up their three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
