Nebraska softball improves to 5-1 with pair of Sunday wins

TEMPE, Ariz. — Nebraska moved its softball winning streak to four Sunday with a pair of victories in the final session of the Kajikawa Classic.

The Huskers run-ruled Cal State Northridge 9-1 in five innings before holding off Seattle University 3-2 to improve their record to 5-1.

Regan Mergele earned her first Division I victory by giving up just four hits in four innings, striking out four. Sydney McCleod pitched the final inning, striking out one and not surrendering a hit.

Every Huskers starter got at least one hit as Tristen Edwards led the way with three hits, Bri Cassidy had a three-run home run, and Alyvia Simmons and Lexey Kneib both had two hits. Nebraska sent 12 batters to the plate in the second inning and scored seven runs.

Against Seattle Kaylan Jablonski improved to 3-0 by pitching 6.1 innings, scattering six hits and striking out five. Freshman Olivia Ferrell earned the first save of her collegiate career striking out the two batters she faced in the seventh inning.

Jablonski and Edwards had two hits each, with Edwards launching a two-run home run in the third inning. Otte also drove in a run in the third.

Next up for the Huskers will be four games in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Atlanta. The Huskers will play two games against both Georgia Tech and Boston College Friday through Sunday.
