Nebraska senior James Palmer is a third-team All-Big Ten selection, according to the league coaches and media.

Palmer, a starter in all 31 games this season, leads the Huskers with 19.1 points and 3.1 assists per game. His scoring average ranks third in the conference and his assist total is 10th. He’s also fifth in the Big Ten with 1.4 steals per game, and his 77.3 percent free-throw shooting percentage ranks 10th.

Palmer shoots 36.5 percent from the field and 31.5 percent from 3-point range this season. He reached double figures in 29 of 31 games and had 15 games with at least 20 points.

Palmer transferred to Nebraska from Miami prior to the 2016-17 season. He was a first-team All-Big Ten selection by the coaches and second-team by the media last year.

Palmer was the only Husker selected to one of the three All-Big Ten teams. Isaiah Roby was Nebraska’s sportsmanship award honoree.

Michigan State’s Cassius Winston was chosen as Big Ten player of the year, and Purdue’s Matt Painter is coach of the year. Michigan’s Ignas Brazdeikis is the freshman of the year, and Penn State’s Josh Reaves won defensive player of the year.

Big Ten willing to consider Omaha for league basketball tournament

In a Q&A Tuesday with the Chicago Tribune, Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said Omaha is one of three Midwestern cities the league would be willing to have “conversations with” about hosting the league’s basketball tournament.

Tribune reporter Teddy Greenstein asked Delany about Minneapolis, Detroit and Omaha as the three Midwestern possibilities after 2022. Chicago hosts the event in 2019 and 2021, and Indianapolis hosts it in 2020 and 2022.

“Those are three to think about,” Delany said when asked about the three cities. “That probably covers the group that we would have conversations with.”

Omaha has a long-term agreement to host the Big Ten baseball tournament at TD Ameritrade Park through 2022.

Omaha has also hosted multiple NCAA men’s basketball tournament games, the NCAA women’s volleyball national championship and is the annual home of the men’s College World Series.
