Husker women’s basketball extends winning streak to four after thumping San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Maddie Simon scored a career-high 20 points Sunday as the Nebraska women won their fourth straight game by thumping San Jose State 81-55.

The Huskers, who finished last season with seven wins, improved to 8-3 entering Tuesday’s 7 p.m. home game against Florida Atlantic.

Simon, a 6-foot-2 junior forward from Lincoln Pius X, hit 9 of 13 shots from the floor, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range.

“Maddie’s just playing with a lot of confidence right now,” coach Amy Williams said in a postgame radio interview. “She probably played one of her best offensive games overall.”

Nicea Eliely added 13 points for the Huskers, and freshman center Kate Cain contributed 10 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Emily Wood, a 5-5 guard, grabbed eight rebounds.

The Huskers finished with a 22-0 advantage in points off turnovers against the Spartans (2-8) and also outscored the hosts 48-10 in the paint.

“It felt really good to get out of here with a good road win and not have to play anybody more than 28 minutes when you’re bouncing back and playing again Tuesday,” Williams said.

The Huskers are home for their next three games.

After Tuesday against Florida Atlantic, they host Washington State at 1 p.m. Friday, then open Big Ten play against Ohio State on Dec. 28.
