LINCOLN — Tyjon Lindsey was supposed to go to Oregon. At least that was the plan.
The four-star wide receiver at Las Vegas Bishop Gorman High School loved Scott Frost’s offense. He was clicking with running back De’Anthony Thomas on visits to Eugene. Thomas was telling the high school sophomore all the things he could do in Frost’s offense as a Duck.
But Frost left for UCF, so Lindsey backed away from Oregon and ended up at Nebraska.
Which makes the situation in Lincoln a pretty sweet deal for Lindsey, he said after practice Saturday.
“I was all said and done to go to Oregon and then he left, so it was like a dream come true now that it’s here,” he said.
Lindsey said he was overthinking a little as a freshman, when he caught 12 balls for 76 yards. When Mike Riley’s staff was fired in December, including wide receivers coach Keith Williams, Lindsey said fellow receivers Stanley Morgan, JD Spielman and Keyan Williams talked about their next move. But they all decided to stay.
“Our final decision,” Lindsey said, “was just like, ‘Look, we’re brothers. Why are we all separating from each other? Why don’t we just try and bring the tradition back to Nebraska football?’
“Like, we’re already here, we signed up for it, why not just follow through with it.”
Lindsey said he feels good after he spent a week in the hospital with rhabdomyolysis during spring workouts. Since then, Lindsey said, he’s lost 10 pounds of body fat and added 10 pounds of muscle.
“I’m ready to be that explosive guy that I always was when I was a younger dude,” Lindsey said. “It’s a new me and we’ll see where it takes me.”
