The Football Writers Association of America on Monday named Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez to its freshman All-America team.

Martinez shared quarterback honors with Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, who will play in Monday night’s College Football Playoff national title game.

Martinez, from Fresno, California, threw for 2,617 yards and 17 touchdowns in 11 games. He rushed for 629 yards and eight touchdowns. His 295.1 total yards per game ranked second in the Big Ten. It was the best statistical season for any freshman in Husker history.

“He’s gonna be a lot better next year,” NU coach Scott Frost said after the Huskers’ 4-8 season. “There’s just no doubt about it.”
