High jumper Landon Bartel sets another career high as Huskers sweep titles

LINCOLN — Landon Bartel set a career high in the high jump for the second straight week, and Nebraska swept the team titles at the Mark Colligan Memorial on Saturday.

In front of 1,279 fans at the Devaney Center, Bartel jumped 7 feet, 3¾ inches, topping his mark of 7-3 at the Graduate Classic last weekend.

In all, the Huskers won 15 events, as the men’s squad scored 165 points to claim its 21st consecutive dual meet, a streak that dates to 2001. The Husker women scored 169 points.

The Huskers swept the 1,600 relay, with the women’s team of Kierra Griggs, Jasmine Barge, Michaela Peskova and Chelsey Jones finishing in 3 minutes, 41.29 seconds for the Big Ten’s second-best time this season.

Griggs, Barge and Peskova all also claimed individual events. Griggs (54.03) took the 400 meters, Peskova (1:32.98) won the 600 meters and Barge (8.34) claimed the 60 hurdles.

The Huskers travel to Colorado Springs, Colorado, next weekend to compete in the Air Force Invitational.

No. 1 Nebraska men’s gymnastics wins behind record vault score

LINCOLN — Anton Stephenson scored a 15.20 to lead the No. 1 Nebraska men’s gymnastics team to a school-record vault score and a 411.750-404.150 win over Ohio State on Saturday night.

The Huskers’ overall score was also the top mark in the nation this season.

Behind Stephenson, the Huskers (1-0, 1-0 Big 10) tied a school vault record of 72.50 during the fourth rotation. Josh Martin posted a 14.50, with Connor Adamsick scoring a 14.40 to finish third.

The Huskers won two additional individual events, as Jake Bonnay matched his career high to win the floor at 14.50 and Daniel Leal claimed the parallel bars at 14.45.

Kyle King also scored a career-high 14.50 on the pommel horse, finishing second behind Ohio State’s Alec Yoder (15.50).

The Huskers will travel to Oklahoma next Saturday.

Nebraska women’s gymnastics team defeats Rutgers to earn second Big Ten win

LINCOLN — Nebraska women’s gymnastics had to post a strong finish on the final rotation to beat Penn State in its opener.

The No. 12 Huskers had little need for a late charge on Saturday night.

Nebraska (2-0, 2-0 Big Ten) dominated Rutgers in front of 4,443 fans at the Devaney Center, leading after each rotation and posting at least a tie for the top four scores in each event in a 196.300-192.975 win.

Abbie Epperson and Megan Schweihofer also tied for the top all-around score at 39.275.

Sienna Crouse won two events, scoring a 9.900 on the floor and a 9.825 on the vault. Taylor Houchin notched a 9.900 to win the uneven bars.

Four Huskers and Rutgers’ Belle Huang finished in a tie on the balance beam with a mark of 9.825.

The Huskers will host Michigan next Saturday.
